Knives on US flights.

Last week it was announced that people would be allowed to carry small knives on flights in the USA again. This is the first time since after 9/11 that knives have been allowed on flights. This is just a stupid idea, I’ve done plenty of flying and never have I thought “oh I wish I had a knife right now”. There’s just no good reason to need a knife on a plane. The only knife I might enjoy would be a cutlery knife because those flimsy plastic ones are dreadful. But I never have something that needs opening with a knife, I never feel the need to whittle something or gut a fish. Then they limit the size of the knife like that will somehow help. Well guys you might get stabbed on a flight but it’ll only go in a couple of inches so that’s okay. There is just no good reason to bring this back. Surely no knives is a good idea  and prevents anything knife related happening on a flight, whereas allowing knives of any size just opens up the possibility of some sort of incident involving knives. Anyway I think we can all agree this is a terrible idea and completely illogical.

I’m rather ambivalent about the entire thing. What’s always bothered me is how they “take” your knives if you happen to forget about them. When flying back from Arizona, for example, I forgot to take my tiny knife off my key chain and had to turn it over. It was one of my favorites! The blade is about an inch in length. Try killing someone with that! (It’s not even threatening). I mean, I don’t even use the blade. Primarily, I use the scissors to trim my nails, and the file to file them down. Would I do that on a flight? Sure. But that’s not the point.

The point is, rather than taking people’s knives and keeping them, the airlines ought to be nice about it and just put them on the flight in envelopes, store them in cargo, and let you pick them up with your luggage on the way out. How hard is that?

I don’t care if someone has to take my pen-knife away from me on a flight. I just want it back. Although, I will admit, losing it gave me the opportunity to get a new one that I like a lot better. It’s got a built in flashlight and a pen. Much better than that toothpick I never used, and those dumb tweezers.

I feel your argument is a bit over the top. Admittedly I don’t need to use a knife on a plane, but I do need to use a knife when I get where I’m going (e.g. a hiking or camping holiday) and If I only take cabin luggage then my only option is to buy a new knife once I land, which is ridiculous.
Stopping knives on flights doesn’t make anything safer. In the right hands you could probably kill someone quicker with a shoelace.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t be able to check a knife, put it in the hold in a suitcase and have it when you arrive. I’m saying no one needs a knife in the cabin during the flight.
